Threads of Connections

HORIZON JAPAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
GRADE 6 INDIVIDUALS & SOCIETY

“Threads of Connections” is a three-day art program created in alignment with G6 I&S curriculum, exploring systems thinking through research-based inquiry and creative advocacy around how individual choices affect social, environmental, and economic systems. Working collaboratively, students transformed complex ideas into artworks using wood, yarn, and hammered nails to visualize interconnected networks and their own roles within them—discovering that they are not only part of these systems, but also capable of shaping them.

DAY 1 Introduction & Group Planning

Students were introduced to the many ways we are connected to social, environmental, and economic systems. They then divided into groups, drew a focus topic from a hat, and brainstormed ideas together.

DAY 2 Art Making

Each group received a slab of scrap wood, nails, and yarn. They hammered nails to mark “points of connection” and threaded yarn between them to represent relationships and interconnections.

DAY 3 Discussion & Reflection

Each group presented their artwork and shared insights gained through the process, reflecting on what their work revealed about human interdependence, responsibility, and balance within systems.
